Thanks Thomas and others from hkrunners.com for a very well-prepared letter. I share similar thoughts on most issues except for the one regarding the souvenior tee.

I have been participating distance running competition for just more than 2 years and there are already more than a dozen souvenior tees in my home. For good or bad, I (and maybe most of the runners) just don't need that much tees! Yes we can easily donate them to NGO or recycle them. But why in the first place they are produced if we don't really need them? The SCM souvenior tees are almost identical year in and year out. Some runners might like to keep all of them, some others might not. Can we suggest the organizer to provide us with the option of choosing to have the tee or not? Even if the entry cost is the same, I would opt not to have the tee next year if the option is given.

SCM is the biggest running event in HK, maybe it can also take the lead for more environmental-friendly distance-running competitions in the future.

I agreed to most of the comments & recommendations made to the organizing committee, except the one suggested giving tee to finishers.

Hi chinkw c-hing, the point is not whether I collect the tee or not. So what do they do with the tees that runners refuse to collect after they already produced? Donate to NGOs? That's ok with me but why should they make it in the first place if we don't need it? It a waste of the fabrics, dyes even energy involved in the whole process. So why doesn't the SCM allow runners to indicate their preference during the application? It's not a problem of whether we have a large enough closet, it is about limiting the wastage, as much as we can.

Can't agree with you any more! This should also be applicable to the printed materials which are all available on the internet.

The first R (reduce) of the 3 Rs for being environmental friendly is equally important with the other two (reuse, recycle)!

其實，如果件 tee 唔喺年年都差唔多款。譬如話，今年黃色、明年白色... 其實我喺會想要㗎...
之不過如果佢一定要年年都差唔多款，咁就真喺叫佢收檔算咯。

In fact, I know a few runners are refuse to take tee for their races. If more runners are doing the same, organisers have to re-consider the necessity of tee or do something different. For example, HKMP are giving singlet in some races.

Maybe this could be an alternative way to say no to organisers for the useless tees. Action is always better than just say.

For T-shirts, there are two types: 1) part of the sponsorship because the sponsor wants people wearing their T-shirt as a kind of advertising. In this case the organizer has little choice, such as the SCM. And for SCM, Standard Chartered now uses the same design for its marathons in various cities in Asia, so its also not easy to ask them to change the design although we don't want them to look the same every year. 2) Race organizers actually need to pay for making these T-shirts. Maybe they can get some discounts from the sports good company in form of sponsorship, but they still need to pay the bulk of the cost for T-shirts. And in such case, I think they should offer runners an option of getting it or not (of course for a lower entry fee), because this can also save them some money. Some organizers just assume runners all like T-shirt as a kind of souvenir, or they also want us to get the T-shirt so that they can piggy-peg their name on the T-shirt as a kind of free promotion because the T-shirts are actually paid by us (like that of the Federation of Trade Union). So let's tell the organizers that they should give us a choice to have the T-shirt or not, not because of the lower entry fee that they should offer, but also for the sake of the environment !
The suggestion of chinkw looks unthinkable because Hong Kong people don't like the idea of turning away something that they have already paid for (are you crazy?). That's why we can only hear shops not providing plastic bags, but not customers refusing to take plastics bags. That's why our society has made very little progress.
