How large is your .pst file? It is used to store your email and attachments. If it is too large.... it may makes your outlook slower... or even messes up the outlook data if it is larger than 1GB.

You can create several .pst files and divide your emails between them.

PS: oh wait. I am using outlook, not outlook express, dont know if this issue exists in outlook express.... cant help you...
