I only use Power bar in long hiking race or training which last for several hours.
Otherwise , I'll choose power gel. Which is useful as you drink several mouth of water with it.
The principle of energy supply from Power gel is just like the sport drink, but the Gel mainy provide complex carbs. this is better than Pocari / Gatorade
For my personal experience, I had ate a pack of energy gel during HM (after 11~12K) and feel like a recharged battery. Before recharge, I feel hard to continous running. After recharged, I feel much better. I dunno is it 心理作用, but it's work for me.
Power Gel is just a brand. I don't like it because it is too sweet for me. I only use Hammer gel which is less sweet and I love the Espresso favour. I personally can't do LSD without using gel. It is not a pyschological effect to me. I take a pack of gel every 75 minutes and alternate sports drinks and water at every aid station,
As for Power Bar, it was the original fuel supplement I used back in the 1980s. Gels not even invented yet. But I didn't like Power Bars because it always stuck to my teeth. Fig bars is another alternative besides Power Bars.
