2009 ING New York City Marathon 紐約市馬拉松

A friend of mine applied for the NYC Marathon lottery today (last day to apply) and her number is in the 400,000s.  Processing fee is $11USD for each entry.  So that is already over $4 millions USD profit for the NYRR (New York City Road Runners).  I really wonder if this is the most profitable race event in the world at this moment!

.....and don't forget that 4 millions dollars are only entry fees for the lottery.  Once you are in, you still have to pay $171 USD to register and they are expecting over 43,000 runners!

$171 is only for US residents.  For international runners, it goes up to $231 !!!  Most international runners go through a special guarantee program (tour and package) to bypass the lottery draw.  Nevertheless, it is still very expensive to visit the Big Apple even for us in the USA.

Nowadays, it seems like these marathon races organizers are trying to make money instead of promoting the sports event.

Tell me about it.  I live in the West Coast of the USA and I am considering going back to HK to run the Chartered Marathon instead of running the NYC.  It is probably going to be cheaper for me.  NYC is ridiculously expensive.
