Garmin watch have build in GPS sensor which is convenience.
Polar's one is external, that means you have to attach it on your arm, shoe etc.

But remeber GPS is a power consuming device that can last no longer than 8 hours something. Polar use AA battery and can change anytime.

I used RS400 for years and I like the interface so much.

But seem that RS400 cannot support G3 GPS sensor. Is there any minimum configure which support GPS under Polar?

Hi Ching

I have RS800 but i use S3 instead of GPS .and S3 is only supported by RS800
IMO,  S3 sensor is better than G3 for running training becaue it can count how many steps per mins.
step/cadencs is critical factor for running form and speed

Yes, you are correct. I haven't used RS800 before but I suppose the interface between 400 and 800 is quite similar.
As I know RS800 and RS300 can support GPS.

I have been using RS800 with S3 for almost a year and it is not a bad device if you really concern on the distance and pace which is quite important for training.

Yesterday, I did a training for half marathon in Tai Mei Tuk with friends and one of them uses Garmin 405 with GPS.  I am a bit surprised that the distance shown between my Polar and his Garmin 405 is almost the same.

To be honest, I do find some disadvantage of my Polar, e.g. the batteries of the watch and S3 foot pod doesn't last long.  Whenever I changed the battery, I found the connection problem which I had to send it back to their office for checking and it would take approx. 10 days each.

I haven't heard such problem from my friend with Garmin's watch but there is no official dealer / maintanence in HK in case if there is any problem.  Besides, the battery is a rechargable one and it can only last for 8 hours with GPS.

Agree with SantorinIsland ching, that there are the main issues (battery & maintenance support) for Garmin's watch in Hong Kong. That's why I search Polar watch, but seem that it is much more experience than Garmin watch. The package for RS800cx Run is around HKD 4xxx .  That's why I asked Ching & Ctse for the comment on using RS800.

My Polar's watch costs me HK$34xx (20% discount from 10x Pro Shop).  It is relatively more expensive than Garmin's watch.  If you like Garmin's watch, it is better to go for 310 because it is water-proof and the battery can last for 20 hours.

If GPS is more important to you, Garmin's watch is a better one and more convenient.  If not, Polar's watch is functional and stylish.

There is a big issue for Garmin has no maintenance support in Hong Kong. My friend's new 310XT has problem after 3 months use. This bring her a trouble, and need to ship the unit back to Australia for maintenance.

Anyway, thanks for Ching's information.

Sorry for late reply.

A few comments about RS800cx:

1. The difference between RS400 and RS800 is mainly only RS800 can use GPS and footpod.

2. Also, RS800 provide attitude and temperature information which RX 400 does not. The attitude information is quite useful for hikers, while I think the temperature is not very accurate.

3. The heart rate belt of RS400 is different from that of RS800. As the transmittion interface is a bit different, I discover that RS400 belt can work under water (ie. when you ar swimming), but RS 800 cannot.

4. Indeed, I have also consider Garmin 405/ Polar RS800cx G3. Garmin 405 is attractive for its builit in GPS. However, batteries goes out easily. You cannot even use the normal watch function when function goes out. Therefore I choose polar. Although the GPS is quite bulky, batteries can be changed easily and it does not affect the watch.

5. Between G3 GPS and S3 footpod, I think GPS is more suitable for multi sports user, while S3 is better for runners only.

1. The difference between RS400 and RS800 is mainly only RS800 can use GPS and footpod.
RS400
RS800

Polar
GPS
Polar

5. Between G3 GPS and S3 footpod, I think GPS is more suitable for multi sports user, while S3 is better for runners only.
GPS S3,
