Just out of curiosity, any hockey fans here? Does anyone in this forum (longrun.hk) follow the Stanley Cup playoffs?

I follow it. But my team lost in the first round.

It's only on cable in Hong Kong and I'm not crazy about the other sports on the channel (translation: too cheap

) to pay to subscribe.

They start to show highlights on TV news now. And I sometimes watch internet TV.

Say, you're from LV. There's no NHL team in LV. Would've thought you'd be more interested in the NBA playoffs these days. LeBron James has a house in LV, right?

My team lost in the 1st round too. I am a diehard Edmonton Oilers fan. I spent many many moons living there. I only follow the playoffs since I moved here from the Great White North 9 years ago. I turn into a Canucks fan these days because Vancouver is still in the playoffs. As for NBA, I wouldn't care less about it. Look at what happened to the Vancouver Grizzlies. Basketball isn't a popular sport up in Canada. Anyway, we do have a minor league hockey team here called the Las Vegas Wranglers which is the farm team for the Calgary Flames. They are also in the playoffs as well. My gut feeling is telling me that Anaheim is going to get the cup this year.

LeBron James does own a house here, but just a small one with only 4,200 sq.ft and 3 bedrooms.

I don't like warm-weather teams - LA, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, ... Hockey is meant to be played in -30C! Even when it's played indoor it *should* be -30 outside.

Did you live in Calgary? I went to high school in Calgary. Back then the Flames were still the Atlanta Flames and then became the Calgary Flames and played in the old Stampede Corral. Battle of Alberta, Hockey Night in Canada with Ron McLean and Coach's Corner with Don Cherry. I missed all these classics!!!

I am with you, I don't like warm weather teams either. I ran the Disneyland 1/2 marathon in 07 when Anaheim got the cup. Part of the course was to run past the Honda Center (Home of the Ducks). There were Stanley Cup banners everywhere. It just wasn't right. Stanley Cup in southern California!!! Come on!

BTW, Phoenix filed for bankruptcy the other day. The new buyer is planning to move the team back to southern Ontario. What about the "Great One" ? Another relocation for him and the family?

I started to be a baseball fans since my son joined this game
at the age of 5. Now, he is a member of the Hong Kong Baseball Team.
I also trained myself to be a baseball scorer so I could enjoy the game more.

Never played baseball myself. Used to watch the final few games of the North American Major Leagues on TV, and the highlights on the news. Watch part of the recent World Baseball Classics on TV recently. In my mind baseball is one of the hardest game to play well but most boring game to watch.

Don't follow it too closely now.

Would be interested in the local baseball scene and development though. Is it a popular sport for kids? Do they have school teams? Amateur league? Any adult league?

It's great that your son is in the Hong Kong Baseball Team. What position does he play? Pitcher, outfield, baseman, catcher? How often does the team play? Against what other teams?

Actually Baseball is not considered as a popular sport in Hong Kong.
There are two official baseball organisations in Hong Kong. One is the
Hong Kong Baseball Association, the management and players are local. They send players of different age groups to join tournaments outside HK. The criteria
of the team members must be HK permanent resident.

The other is the Hong Kong Little League. This is an organisation initially
formed by the Japanese living in HK. And later, Korean, US and more and more local people joined. They organise league games for each year. And the outstanding players are selected to form an All-Stars Team to participate the Little League Asia-Pacific Tournament every year. My son had been selected in the Junior All-star Team for three years to participated the Asia-Pacific Tournaments in Saipan, Indonesia and Guam. The All-Star Teams are usually composed of players from local, Japan, US and Korea. My son joined the locl junior Japanese Team for three years. And I consider the training of Japanese coaches are strict and tough. Though the coaches are not professional baseball coaches, they are usually the fathers of the players only.
All the league games are support by the player family. We shared the jobs by having fathers as team managers, coaches, game umpires; mothers as scorers and take care of the players on uniforms, gears, etc.
As far as I know, there is no school baseball team in HK now. Few years ago, there is a new international school in Tung Chung organized their school team by
one of their US teacher. But the school team closed with the leave of the teacher
after two years.
Like my son in the Japanese Team, they normally have practice on every Saturday and game on Sunday during theh League season. If there is no game on Sunday, practice will replace. It is considered as the family activitives for the players.
Japanese fathers and mothers gathered togethered in the sport field the morning and afternoon with lunch prepared, chatting and a social gathering.
But usually the foreigner teams are only up to the junior age group, as the kids of age around 15 ,16 have to go back to their home countries for study, especially for the Japanese. There is no Japanese high school in HK.

For local players like my son, after completion of the junior league. He can only join the Hong Kong Baseball Association if he intends to continue. Through the HKBA, he had joined the tournamnets in Japan and Taiwan last year.

My son takes the positions as picher ( he is a left-handed pitcher ), first baseman and outfielder.
In HK, there is also adult league. But all are amateur players.
It's a pity, you cannot earning your living as a professional baseball player nor a baseball coach in HK.

就睇多左了.

雖然,一場波打成兩三個鐘閒閒地,不過我唔覺悶喎.
因為,佢地好多戰術上既運用,都係好好睇架.

雖然NOW只係播晒NY YANKEES既比賽,
但係其實我幾憎佢地,好似有錢大晒咁.

一有好球員就買晒佢地返黎,唉.......
[就算有個台灣一級投手係佢隊波都係咁話]

Baseball is less boring on TV 'cause all the boring time slots are filled with replays and commentaries. If you watch it live :yawn: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz .........

Hockey is exciting to watch. But if you watch it the first time, especially on TV, you'll miss the puck 'cause it travels very fast. And you'll only learn to appreciate the fights after a while.

Back to the playoff, Chicago's tied with Vancouver. Go Hawks!

Even though both sports are not that popular in Hong Kong, I bet there's more participation in baseball than hockey - there should be more baseball diamonds in Hong Kong than ice rinks (I think). I do notice kids with their parents hauling hockey gears to ice rinks in the weekend.

I've once watched a baseball game (afternoon game) at the stadium in Toronto (Toronto Jays) and it is not that bored. But I agree that the replays and commentaries would make the game more easy to understand.

What's your favourite team in MLB? Chicago White Sox?
For me, it's Boston Red Sox (or, could be any team apart from Yankees)

The Sports Channel in Hong Kong (Now 635) is now replaying the playoff (Game 4, between Chicago and Vancouver).
(Now 1-1, Overtime)

Frankly speaking, it seems to me that the players are all fighting legally rather than playing a game.

Sounds like your son has the potential and the drive to go farther in baseball than most in Hong Kong, and he's enjoying it. How does he compare to other pitchers in his age groups in, say, Taiwan?

Playing baseball at a high level, i.e. professionally, is very difficult. Michael Jordan tried for a couple of years as a minor league player for a farm team of the Chicago White Sox, during his first retirement from basketball, and he failed (miserably in my opinion). Not that he was athletically over the hill at the time. He actually went back to the NBA afterwards and won three more championships. It just shows how difficult baseball is as a sport.

With the limited support and facilities in Hong Kong, your son has already achieved a lot, and I'm sure he'll achieve more in the future, especially with a supportive and understanding parent like you.

Everyone in Canada went nuts cheering for the team. I even had to skip class to go home to watch it live. Dave Winfield, Dave Steward, Joe Carter, Juan Guzman, John Olerud, Roberto Alomar, Paul Molitor, Pat Borders.......etc all became instant heros.

As for hockey, Canucks is going to kick Hawks' a$$ tonight in GM Place. Luongo is good but I think Salo is still out. I just read the newsapaer, Vancouver is the underdog in the our Sportbooks here though. In the world hockey scene, Team Canada beat Sweden the other day and advances into the finals against the Russians this Sunday (10th) in Switizerland for the World Championship game. Go Canada Go!!! Go Canucks Go!!!

Definitely! the Central Red Army and Viktor Tikhovov (sp?) in Canada Cup. Best one I think was the 1987 series . Gretzky, Messier, Lemieux and Fuhr against the KLM line!!!! Man, this brings back memories. Gretzky still considers those were the BEST hockey games he has ever played in his entired career.

My son is in the middle-high level of standard if compared with the same age group of
pitchers in HK. But if compare with those pitcers in Taiwan, I think he is a poor one.
The baseball players in Taiwan are trained to be both physically and technically stronger than those in HK. The HK Baseball Association has employed a Taiwan baseball coaches to train the local players. My son is lucky to have the training, especially the coach is a left-handed pitcher, and my son is also the same.

I had devoted most of my time on the baseball activities of my son in the past.
He is grown up and the development on the sport should be on his own.
I can enjoy my running now.

My son is still participating the HKCEE, he is a Form 5 student now.

Hehe - I like Chicago, as a city - used to spent a bit of time there. Spent time in Vancouver as well but Chicago is the kind of "tough" townthat I like.

I kinda support all Chicago sport teams - Hawks, Cubs (at the expenseof Chisox), Bears, Bulls. But except for the Bulls and the Bears forone year, the other teams never win anything.

In the 70s, I am an old geezer you know

. I am more of a Canucks fan than an Oilers fan these days. I used to play fantasy hockey but not anymore.
