A OPEN LETTER TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE HK SAR WHICH HAS THE INTENTION TO BID TO HOST 2023 ASIAN GAMES
TO: The Government of the HK SAR
We are so excited to learn that The Government of the HK SAR has the intention to bid to host the 2023 Asian Games and commit to popularize sports.
But we are so disappointed that HK police recently took a series of unreasonable actions against long distance running along Tolo Harbor. These actions included intercepting runners in the so-called cycleways and requesting runners to present ID cards (more than a year ago, Police Commander promised that they would not take such actions). During Coca Cola Race and 1/4 Marathon Race, HK police spent a lot of manpower to strictly control the running track range and prohibit runners from running onto the cycleways. For some of the running tracks, the race with nearly one thousand runners was forced to proceed in less than a meter width footpath. Since there were also morning walkers using the path, the overcrowding situation was even more serious than Million Walk. All these actions and practices by police are opposite to government policy.
For a Half Marathon Race scheduled to be held in Shatin, permission was not granted by police because someone objected and also owing to a past record in 2 years ago that runners from that race stepped onto the so-called cycleway range. It seems that people participated in running sports will be prosecuted and criminalized in the near future.
We hereby call on the concerned departments to re-formulate reasonable and appropriate functions for the exercise trails, stop those measures and actions causing damage to social harmony, and establish a harmonious environment for sports.
Thank you for your kind attention.
Yours sincerely,
