Congratulation C-hing.
I participated the marathon in 2012, and I planed the trip by myself.
I spent only few days in Boston and then I travelled to NYC by tram.
As Boston is a small city, so it’s not difficult to plan the trip.
By the way, please be reminded to reserve your hotel room as early as possible as Boston Marathon is a big big event and there will be thousands of people staying in Boston during the marathon weekend.
I stayed in Boston Hotel Buckminster. It locates right next to the Kenmore Subway Station. Moreover, it also locates at around 40K mark of the marathon route and your family can cheer you up just by waiting outside the hotel lobby. Room rate is also acceptable.
