11/28 Black Friday, what does it mean? Should be thanksgiving day holiday, right?
The Americans call the day after Thanksgiving Day Black Friday. It is the most busiest retail shoppping day. They call it black because it refers to the beginning of the period in which retailers are in the black (turning a profit). People would start lining outside (set up tents) the stores two days before and try to be the 1st one to get into the store in the morning. Many people buy the goods then sell them on ebay to make a profit out of it.

「黑色星期五」銷售額意外漲3%

出乎大多數專家意料的是，29日公布的最新數字顯示，今年節日季的銷售勢頭從一開始就驚人強勁，黑色星期五的銷售額非但未降，還反增3%。不過，這一業績是以店家犧牲利潤為代價的。
ShopperTrak RCT公司周六公布5萬多家零售商黑色星期五銷售業績的初步統計報告，發現這一天的銷售額增長了3%，達到106億元，而去年為103億元。
黑色星期五傳統上是銷售額大增的一天，但由於經濟形勢不確定和全球金融市場動盪，不少專家悲觀預期，今年消費者花錢時會更謹慎。但數字顯示民眾消費的意願顯然高於大多數專家的預期，不過這與店家今年打出的瘋狂折扣價有著極大的關係。
雖然這一數據無法反映出整個節日季的銷售成績，但黑色星期五的確是衡量民眾消費意願的重要指標。去年感恩節長周末佔了節日季銷售總額的約10%。儘管如此，業內專家仍然認為，由於民眾大幅縮減預算，今年節日期間的整體銷售仍將為幾十年來最差，漲勢很難維持。而且，今年感恩節至聖誕節之間的購物日還少於往年，只有27天，相比之下去年有32天。
在全國範圍內，南部地區黑色星期五的銷售額比去年增長3.4%，東北部地區攀升2.6%，中西部和西部地區的增幅分別為3%和2.7%。JC Penney等大型零售商均報稱本周末生意相當火爆，各種驚人折扣吸引大批消費者前來掃貨。但JC Penney周六亦發表聲明表示，「我們相信，包括黑色星期五在內的某一天或某個周末的銷售數據，不足以成為一個有意義的商業指標...........from Sing Tao Daily USA
