Mizuno Rider12 is a pair of durable shoes that can offer good protection.  The price should be around $400-450 (original price should be over $600 if no discount) in most of the shops now, as it is an old model (Rider13 is the latest one).  Most importantly, you can still find it in the market.

the protective effect of running shoes is resulted from the design and materials.
If the materials are aged (e.g. "rubber"), then the flexibility and the shock absorptive effect will be reduced significantly.

That's why second-hand shoe cannot offer good protection.
