Boston 2009 was a blast.  I ran into a number of very strong runners from Hong Kong at the little motel where we stayed .  What a coincidence!

Anyone planning to go to Boston in 2010!  We should meet up and have Boston lobster!

I am not sure about it.  But you can check with BAA to see what charity is possible.

Yes, it can be expensive to go the charity running route.

Sorry, George.  It is my bad.  I am now 49 (born in 1960) - not 39.  I just keep thinking that I was still 39

So, you need 3:30 starting this Nov/Dec to qualify for the 2011 Boston, right?

George C-hing, do you know what kind of charity counts toward the Boston? do they have an official recognized list of charities, how about HK charities?

Yes, there are about 5% (~1300) charity runners every year.  You will have to raise probably about $US5k or more and write an essay to tell BAA why you should be accepted.  A couple of years ago when the economy was good, it took more than US$7500 to be a Boston charity runner.  If you have a lot of generous friends and family, this is certainly one way to do it

You will still need 3:15 for the 2010 Boston.  But if you can run 3:20 from late Nov 2009 to Jan/Feb 2011 (when Boston fills up), you can qualify for the 2011 Boston, even though you are not 40 years old yet by this coming Nov

Ivrunner told me that one can enter the race by raising funds for charity also. Dont know the details...but I might try that route in the future!

Or you can just tell me your actual time when you qualified last Dec, and I can work it out according to your example.

I need to improve by 24 mins over my FM time this year to qualify for next year's Boston, when i'll graduate to the next age group.

    Maybe in 2 years......

Keep it up.  Given the right training, it is not impossible.

Yeah!  So it is a possibility after all.  Now it all comes down to me - my ability then.  Okay, I will work hard, but not too hard to cause any injury.

By the way, if you are 39, 44, 49, etc, you have a better chance to qualify.  The reason is that Boston gives you an 18 month window prior to the race to qualify.  And it doesn't matter how old you were when you qualified, as long as you are in the right age group on the Boston race day.

I was 38+11months& 2 weeks when I qualified last Dec.  That result alone has qualified me for both 2009 (when I was 39 and needed a 3:15) and 2010 Boston (when I will be 40 and only need a 3:20).  The 2010 BQ was my original goal for my 2008 Dec Marathon.  So, use this to you advantage

There are many heated discussions about whether MP3 should be banned or not.  Frankly, I don't have any position on this.  Personally, I dont' wear one for a race.  I do, however, wear my iPod in  ...

Actually I looked at USATF website, they changed the rules last year again ~ "At its annual meeting in December 2008, USA Track & Field (USATF) amended rule 144.3(f) effectively lifting its previously imposed ban on headphones and other similar devices at USATF-sanctioned events".  That is why you saw runners wearing headphones/ear pieces in Boston.

Anyway, I am the opposite, I have to have my music on if the distance is more than 6 miles long, actually I should say songs instead.  I am still listening to old songs more than 20 years old like Flashdance, YMCA, Ah Lam's remix........etc.  I guess I am conditioned to them.  It rained all day last year at St. George.  I had my poncho on the whole time, all I heard was the noise of the poncho rubbed against my ears.  As for safety reason, many insurance companies don't cover races that allowed headphones.  Since USATF lifted the ban, I don't know how this is going to work now.

There are many heated discussions about whether MP3 should be banned or not.  Frankly, I don't have any position on this.  Personally, I dont' wear one for a race.  I do, however, wear my iPod in all my training.  I train alone almost 100% of time.  It is very boring without music.   But when I race, it is so nice to run with others.  Wearing a MP3 kind of defeat the purpose of this "group" feeling.  For me, it is fun to run a race without music.  I can focus on the runners surrounding me.  Time just goes by so quickly in a race anyway.

One of the reasons for banning it is for safety.  There are cases that some runners bumped into each other or are blocking the medics, etc.  But I guess if the volume is not too high and the runner isstill able to hear the surroundings, it is probably not very dangerous.

Normally, those who do wear one usually tend to run a little slower so I don't see them very often.  However, in Boston this year, I do see some pretty good runners (women running 3:10 pace are pretty good) wearing one.

Would you bring MP3 this time?

I don't really care and I will this time.  If they really want to enforce it, they can pull me off the course then.  I ran 3 marathons last year without it.  It was a pain in the a$$ for me.  Actually all USATF certified races are BQ races.  And you are not supposed to wear any music device in those races.  It all depends if the RD wants to follow the rules or not.

Thanks, bro (another term for ching).

Thanks for the information.  If I make it, it will be the best case scenario for me - run my first-ever full-marathon and get Boston-qualified.

    Well, ...

Most likely, Boston registration won't fill up until mid-Jan next year.  So, if you can qualify by Jan 2010, you should be able to run 2010 Boston.

Well, then again, it is impossible this year because I cannot sign up for Boston Marathon before I get certified, right?  To do that it means I have to run my first full-marathon this autumn, which is like just two months away from now.  That is just crazy!

Can Macau Marathon or XIAMEN Marathon (夏門)  be  accepted by Boston?

If the race is certified for its distance by some official authority, then it should be acceptable.

How about this one, but far far way from HK ~~
    Utah St. George Marathon ,
    - downhill decending marathon from 5240 ft to 2680ft.
    http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h147/lvrunner/longrundothk/StG ...

This is probably the best course-aided marathon, but you have to make sure you practice downhill running beforehand, in order to avoid burning out your quad.
