I am pretty sure you can run faster if you push harder.
However, that are some good points if you run rather conservatively at the beginning.
as you might probably make "negative split" (2nd half faster than 1st half), your body (probably your heart and brain) would be more adaptable when you try to accelerate and you would have less chance to blow up (vomit) during the game.
I have just an article about "brain message to body when you are running) from a magazine. Sometimes our brain might be too conservatively ordering us not to run so fast, but such signal is rather the early warning than the threat to die. If you are interested I will explain more later (I am now studying at library).
so far your running style is quite similar with me as we act quite conservatively during the race sometimes.
