There is a movie earlier in July featuring real baseball players in HK named "Cities without baseball" (無野之城). Although the comment on the movie is not so good, you get a sense of how baseball is in a place like HK just by the name of the movie.
Like Alex c-hing, I first got a tase of baseball through comics like "Touch" during my primary school years. In those old days there were even less ppl involved in the sports and they were very limited to Shatin. I remeber one day after my parents took me to ride a bike (3 wheels, I still can ride a bike without an assisting wheel now ) in Tai Wai and I saw some kids of nearly my age who wore helmets and carried some aluminium bat with them. I told my parents I wanted to try playing baseball but they could not help since they did not know how to get me to a team.........Then my baseball dream remained in TV and comic books.......
I learnt playing softball while studying in university. Softball is more popular than baseball in colleges in HK, largely due to the lack of a field large enough for baseball. There are softball teams for most Univesities in HK and an inter-collegiate tournament is held each spring. I kept playing softball and occassionally some baseball. In fact, it is the reason for my distance running since I wanted to improve my cardio for the ball games. And now I also fall in love with running  In HK, there are both baseball and softball leagues of different levels. There are 1/4 to 1/3 of ppl playing in both leagues. We participated the softball league for 8 years now.
I know there is triple A team in the Vegas and they are affiliated with the Dogers. Good for you, lvrunner. The Dogers has a great farm system. Have you watched the Tawianese SS prospect Chin-lung HU (胡金龍) played? He was doing good in the minor until this year when he was called up, hitting poorly and ultimately ended up with an injury. Another Dogers' Taiwanese, LHP Hong-chih KUO, is a flame-thrower and strike-out artist but is too injury-prone. He is now in the Dogers' bullpen posting a very decent 1.89ERA.
But the one who made the most noise must be RHP Chien-ming Wang of the Yankees, who is now regarded as a national treasure by the Taiwanese. I visited Taiwan in late June and you can feel the effect of Wang everywhere. His face is on the cans of lots of drinks and his commercials is just everywhere. Even he is currently on the disabled list, every Yankees game is broadcasted and they are followed by everyone there.
Those photos in the Angels stadium are very nice. I have been to the States twice, both in freezing Decembers when baseball is absolutley silent. I wish I will have a chance to watch baseball live and run in the States. Keep letting us know the running competition you join over there.  |
