Hope this is not seen as self-publicty, I would like to add something from the view of the operator of HKRunners since our name was mentioned by Wilson. First, it's never our goal of being "professional" or "independent"; we just want to do something to promote running as a sport in Hong Kong, perhaps a serious sport. I think we are more than just providing information, and I would rather see it as a platform for runners to share information and experience, and help and support each others. And because our website is in English, we can let people around the world know that although Hong Kong is small, populated and polluted; we do have an active running community, have lots of running races and good places to run.
We operate from the money donated from our users, and because our operating cost is small we can keep going without advertising which has made things much easier. So we would help any organisations, companies or individuals who could help contribute to this goal, whether their purpose is to make money or not. And we don't mind if any organisation/companies/individuals use our website for publicity or even advertising purpose as long as they have something to do with running.
We see the website more as an extension of contacts and friendship among runners because many of our users know each other (like longrun.hk, but unlike other forums in which many of the users still enjoy making remarks on anonymous basis). I think the existence of Longrun.hk has filled a gap for runners to network and socialize with other runners and enjoy the time together. Actually this has been a major reason for people to join running clubs, and plays an important role in promoting running in Hong Kong. But on the other hand, there are also runners who don't like or have no time for networking because they are already too busy taking care of their training, family and job, and they need to go online to keep in touch with the sport the love and get updated information.
And apart from what you can see on our website, we have been doing other things such as helping overseas visitors to join races or find places to run while they are in Hong Kong; help the English-speaking community to find places to run, meet running friends or join a club; and make suggestions to race organizers and help promote their events, etc. Recently there has been an increase in enquries from overseas visitors (now more than 30% of visitors to our website are from overseas) who would like to run with local runners while they are in Hong Kong, and I believe longrun.hk could contribute in this area with its extensive networks. |
